Piano Concerto Nº 1
“Minor Experience in C♯”
I always loved piano concertos. I can’t count the number of times I listened to Pollini playing Chopin’s 1st Concerto, or Martha Argerich playing Ravel, always in awe of the greatness of composition and performance.
After the events of October 7, I felt that I needed to create a bubble of normality for myself by going back to a different time. I put aside everything I was working on and started composing a piano concerto in Classical style. Over the next two years, note by note, bar by bar, I completed three movements — twenty minutes of music. My goal was to compose a piece that stands on the shoulders of the Classical composers, yet brings a contemporary approach with an Israeli flavor (plus an inevitable reference to “Barbie Girl”). I recorded the concerto by playing all parts using virtual instruments, an endeavor that in itself took a few months.
